How come Rene Gallimard didn’t realize that Song is a man?
Throughout the movie we see Rene having relations with Song and touching each other and kissing. One would think that they would feel around the private area and realize something is different. In China during that time women weren’t even allowed to be in plays, their roles were played by men obviously would be hard for someone to know that because Rene was from france. Rene seemed a little clueless and confused when he learned that she was a man, Rene was with her for almost 20 years and even has a “baby” with her so that indicates that they had sex but he didn’t see her naked. Which could only mean that Song must be hiding something. Song tricks for so long which causes Rene to get arrested for giving Song intel and Rene commits suicide.
What happen to Rene’s wife?

Taking Steps Back

In Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg, Jess Goldberg the main character goes through many trials and hardships throughout most of hir life.  Jess has many violent and discriminating experiences in hir life because ze’s a butch lesbian, in an environment and society where it’s unacceptable. Jess’s transition through life from a young child into becoming an adult and facing many issues throughout the novel. Jess passes as a different person to become happy with hirself even though passing puts hir into difficult situations. Stone Butch Blues shows that passing can lead to unhappy endings as well as emotionally and physically damage someone.

Jess had been passing since a young age, which started hir search for finding true happiness. Ever since ze was a child Jess was seen as different in hir family eyes. Most children at their young age have both parents there for them, to nurture and educate and love them, where as Jess didn’t. “I realized that the world could do more than just judge me, it wielded tremendous power over me. I didn’t care if anymore if my parent’s didn’t love me” ( Feinberg 21). Jess says this while being in psychiatric ward, because hir parents felt that this could help change hir and that it could be hir medicine to becoming “normal” in there eyes. While being at the psychiatric ward in order to get out quickly, Jess passes as being a “normal girl”. Two days after ze leaves the ward ze decides to runaway, “I had accepted that fact in the three weeks I had survived alone in this hospital… My mind was focused on escape. I wanted to get out of this place and run away from home” (Feinberg 22). Jess decides to runaway because ze knows that hir family doesn’t care for hir because ze is considered different to them. Having this revelation can be hard on anyone at a young age especially because Jess made the decision to leave hir family behind. Some people may feel that Jess running away was the best option for hir. This argument is questionable because Jess could’ve stayed and face hir problems because maybe hir parents could’ve changed and support hir. Jess decision to pass and leave hir family brought anger and not happiness later in hir life.

Later in the story Jess decides to start taking male hormones so ze could pass as a male, when Jess makes this decision ze doesn’t think about the consequences that could happen while passing. Theresa, Jess’s lover feels that this decision to pass as a male is a bad one and they get into an argument about this. Jess is very saddened by Theresa not being supportive because Jess feels that passing as a male would be hir only way of finding happiness.  “How come nobody gives me any choices in life? I can’t go on living this way, but you wont go through through the only door that’s open for me” (Feinberg 152). Jess decides to take the hormones and looses Theresa which doesn’t help hir find happiness it just takes hir steps back. While taking the pills Jess starts to change, later on in the novel ze goes to a woman’s clinic because ze gets a vaginal infection. Jess has a bad experience while being there,

Then ze said, I don’t understand what your problem is, but this is a clinic for women who are sick you’re using that up that resource right now.’ ‘What?’ ‘You may think you’re a woman,’ Roz continued, ‘but that doesn’t mean you are one.’ My anger ignited. ‘Fuck you’ I shouted. (Feinberg 235)

Since taking these hormones we see the masculinity coming out of hir. Jess at the clinic wants to get treated for hir feminine parts and is denied because ze is trying to pass as a male. Hir decision of taking these hormones made hir lose Theresa and ze had also got humiliated at the at clinic. Jess later decides to stop taking the hormones because it wasn’t going to help hir find happiness.

Jess continues to pass as a man and finds a female lover because ze becomes desperate to make love with someone.  Jess passes while in the bedroom with this female lover and ze pulls out a dildo and says to hirself, “What made me think this could work?” (Feinberg 191) Jess passing as a man in this part of the story could’ve really tarnish hir career because ze would’ve been discovered. Jess luckily passes while becoming intimate with Annie the female lover, Jess took a risk that could’ve scarred hir. Jess decides to end things with Annie because ze knew it would’ve been hard to pass as a male, “Sooner or later it was going to blow up”(Feinberg 195). It seems as if Jess through out the story just wants to find any type of relationship with a person and to have that connection with hirself and happiness.

Near the end of the story Jess becomes fed up with passing and feels that it makes hir unhappy. When Jess start not to pass anymore ze is able to have relationships and make friends with people, who ze feels makes hir happy when ze is around them. “You Know, I told them, I’ve been searching for you all for a long time.” (Feinberg 267) Jess starts to have a friendship with hir neighbor who is also transgender. Another key moment in Jess’s life is when ze is able to stand in front of people at a Lesbian and Gay rally in New York, and tell them hir life story. Jess at this point felt obligated to tell hir story, “And I was afraid if I let this moment pass, I might never be brave enough to try again” (Feinberg 296). Jess seems to have the relief that ze had been looking for as if the weight was off hir shoulders because the crowd accepted hir for who ze really was by applauding.

“Stone Butch Blues” shows the being true to one’s self will bring the happiness. Jess’s struggles in life shows us the many physical and emotional damages that passing can do. Jess tried to pass as something else that she wasn’t, to get hirself out of a difficult situation but figured out that if ze was true to hirself that ze would find true happiness. These moments that occur in hir life shape Jess into the person who ze becomes today.

Aside

Thesis: Passing as something you’re not can be beneficial to someone but it can also have many consequences.

Intro: We all know someone who has tried to pass as someone or something that they’re are not, especially in todays society and media we see a lot of people passing so they could reap the benefits of passing. Williams Pickmans quote talks about seizing the opportunity to pass but is it really worth it?

1. People try to pass so they can get ahead in life
Many African American such as Jack tried to pass so they could make more money financially because white people made more money.
Annita Hemmings was women who was passing as white so she could go to college.
In “Who is passing for who”, The Iowans claim to pass because they could and cause
2.Talk about the many negative consequences of passing
The passing of Jack and Coleman Silk and how it basically broke up there families.
The emotional toll in took on Coleman and Jack
The reaction of Colemans Wife and Jack’s Girlfriend, what would there reaction be if they did find out?
3. My feeling towards it is it okay
talk about Pickens quotes and how it could better accommodate someone

Conclusions: Many people in society try to pass as something they’re, but it has become such an everyday occurrence that we don’t even notice it at all anymore. Passing has it’s limitations and I think it depends on someone can deal with the consequences when it comes to being a passer.

Paragraph

Passing as someone your not can have many consequences that could hurt or benefit you. Passing has many benefits as well in areas such as employment in times and areas where racial discrimination occurs. We see in a lot of the readings that we did in class that a lot of African American were trying to pass a white to get in to school as well as get a better job to support there families. Annita Hemmings was person who tried to pass as a white person and she was even voted as the most beautiful person of her College and when they found out that she was actually African American and they still let her graduate. I think when it comes to employment I think the story of Jack comes into play because he knows that if he had identified himself as an African American he would’n have had the same opportunities as a white person would have. Another benefit of passing is in the time of slavery, some slaves passing as white to avoid getting Lynched.
Passing can also have have it’s negatives such as breaking up of families and just hurting anyone close to you negatives that can totally haunt a person. We talked about Jack and how he passed as a white even though he was black and he had an encounter with his mother when he was out with his girlfriend who was white. Jack doesn’t want to tell the truth to his girlfriend because he doesn’t want her to leave him, his decision to ignore his mother will probably scar him for the rest of his life because he decided to act like he didn’t know this women when it was actually his mom. Living with a lie during most of a persons life can have an emotional toll on a person as well as people around you cause they feel deceived that someone so close to them could act like nothing happened.

Q: Were the light-colored people actually white or colored.
H: I think in the reading, the couple were actually White people trying understand and feel like what it was to be to a colored person at that time. I also feel that the couple probably heard many stories about colored people and wanted to know whether they were true or not. The probably also wanted to teach Caleb a lesson about Passing and also about discrimination. I think that couple also felt they needed to teach him about how to treat others of different races.
Q: How did the findings effect Caleb

BLog shot #5

-Film Review-
The Human Stain was a really good movie it brought up a lot of social and racial issues. There were a lot of scenes in the movie that had me surprised and also confused. The one scene that got to me was the scene when Coleman goes back to his house to tell his mother that he had met a woman and that he was to marry her. The part that got to me in this scene is that got to me is when he told his mother that he told his fiancee that his parent were dead. That really got to me because he would go as far as breaking up his family to be with someone and to be apart of society. I could never do that especially to a mother who has gone her way to provide for you her life. Coleman’s mother even called him a murderer, I think she called him that because metaphorically called his parents dead and also because he basically killed off his family ties. Overall I really enjoyed the movie and I was really waiting to see which character in the movie was the one passing and I was surprised to see that it was Coleman.
